Chicago Mattress Company (CMC), the nation’s largest and most innovative mattress renovator, grew from humble beginnings. When Andy Shifrin, newly married and freshly graduated from Colorado State University, joined his dad, Jerry, in the upholstery fabric business, neither had any idea where this team would take the company. The modest business sourced vinyl overruns and seconds from mills in Wisconsin and Mississippi to sell to small furniture upholsterers in the Chicago area.
Andy soon recognized an opportunity to use those same sources to serve a new market – mattress manufacturers. As Andy called on local mattress manufacturers and a handful of small renovators in Chicago, he learned that sourcing good used bedding was a real challenge for renovators. He also recognized that by applying solid business principles and offering consistent and reliable service, mattress renovation offered a perfect way to provide a quality product to an underserved market and at the same time to address the growing problem of responsible mattress disposal.
So, when Andy saw the opportunity to purchase a used tape edge machine, he and Jerry made the investment and launched Chicago Mattress Company. Working out of the upholstery fabric warehouse, CMC began with only a handful of Chicago furniture stores and thrift shops as customers. At the same time, Andy reached beyond the local market to develop relationships with leading mattress retailers all across the region to solve one of their major logistics problems – disposing of the used bedding that they remove when new mattresses and box springs are delivered.
With a consistent supply of quality cores, an unwavering dedication to delivering the industry’s finest service, and their personal commitment to always “doing things right,” Andy and Jerry quickly grew the business. In 1997, just one year after making their first mattress, CMC moved to its current location at 4107 W. Kinzie, which since has been expanded three times. Today, the CMC manufacturing facility occupies over 80,000 square feet, with a production capacity of over 1,500 pieces per day. In addition, CMC has purchased a 100,000 square foot facility to operate a separate mattress recycling business.
CMC’s current line includes 20 different models of renovated mattresses, from promotional smooth tops to premium tack-and-jump pillow tops, each one meeting all CPSC standards and manufactured using a unique process that ensures that CMC products will not pose a bed bug risk to its customers. CMC delivers to retailers in 16 states and has its own fleet of trucks for servicing stores in the Chicago metropolitan area. With Andy and Jerry still at the helm, CMC always is looking to take the business to another level….and its history suggests that they will.
